From Austerity to Modernity: Reflections on Public and Private Housing in Post-War Coventry

University of Cambridge

Thesis exploring the social, political and economic factors that influenced changing attitudes to housing during the rebuilding of the city after 1945.
Two estates were analysed – Willenhall Wood built by Coventry City Council in 1958-65, and West Point by the private developers McLean in 1960-61. The designs of both reflected a ‘desired way of living’ shaped by shifting ideas of community, individual status and the role of the woman within the home.
