Imagine Bamboo | with Orit Azaz, Imagineer Productions and Coventry University
Artist/maker/facilitator | Various locations including Coventry University and Daimler Powerhouse
Imagine Bamboo is an ambitious public art, engagement and creative enquiry project exploring the potential of bamboo – widely held to be one of the most important sustainable building materials for the planet.
At Coventry University making exercises with the material were embedded in the curriculum in Architecture and other design subjects as part of a series of [CO]-LABs. These introduced opportunities for collaboration between subjects as well as the chance to learn from professional practitioners working with bamboo. The easily-accessible nature of the material allowed students to rapidly learn through making at both large and small scales, as well as embedding sustainable materials in their practice at an early point in their design education.
The 2024 Summit held at the university showcased wider work in the field, including performance, art and design and brought together bamboo specialists and practitioners from a range of disciplines to discuss the future of bamboo in the UK.
As part of Imagineer's internal programme of events, work with community making group Monday Night Makers culminated in a series of bamboo sculptures that were exhibited as part of a celebration of the company's work.
