National Theatre: Together X installation
Lyttelton foyer, National Theatre | shortlisted, final two
a collaboration with Abby Clarke
A competition for a long-term installation in the Lyttelton foyer of the National Theatre to create an awe-inspiring installation that could be used as part of a fundraising campaign. Our proposal was to create a colourful and joyful installation in response to Lasdun’s dynamic space that incorporated multiple viewing points and celebrated the various individuals involved in making theatre coming together as a whole.
The design consists of seven column-like structures - their scale
and positioning mirroring the grid structure of the Lyttelton Foyer ceiling - made from a metal rod and mesh framework which is partially clad in blocks of transparent colour created using recycled theatre lighting gel from the existing National Theatre stock. Individual plaques of white translucent material with donor names laser cut from them are added to the outside of the structure, to be illuminated internally by glowing LED letters. These lighting elements use anamorphic design principles to spell out the word ‘TOGETHER’ from two key viewpoints of the Lyttelton Foyer the view from the South Bank window and from the first floor balcony. With a focus on sustainability, the installation uses materials which are fully reusable or recyclable.
