The Duchess of Malfi
Designer | ADC Theatre, Cambridge
A re-imagined version of Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi set in 1930s Italy explored themes of power and corruption, within a heightened political atmosphere. The two halves of the play required markedly different aesthetics, with the first half taking cues from the rational facade of Terragni’s Casa del Fascio and the second revealing the darker image within, based on a 1934 adaptation of the Fascist party’s headquarters. Images of propaganda from the play’s political characters were projected onto the set at key moments in the play, transforming the architectural features of the set into a backdrop for the play’s harrowing messages.
